The ColecoVision is a home games console that was released in August 1982 by Coleco Industries, being a second generation console.
At the time of release, the Atari 2600 would have been a main competitor, and although this machine was commercially more successful (although ColecoVision sales did pass 1 million by early 1983), the ColecoVision was a more advanced system, enabling it to offer a closer experience to the more powerful arcade game systems of the time.
It is estimated that around 145 titles were produced for the console, during it’s lifespan from 1982 – 1985.
When the ColecoVision was officially discontinued by October 1985, total sales were estimated to be in excess of 2 million units. The video game crash of 1983 has been noted as being responsible for the console being discontinued, after less than 3 years after it’s launch.
